Native American Sports Heroes Series

The Native American Sports Heroes Series was begun in 2008 to focus attention on people and teams of interest to particular readers. Readers do not need to read all books in the series as each book is to stand by itself. Readers will select those volumes of interest to themselves. Background information is provided in each volume in the series to make the book understandable by readers who are new to the topic. The initial books in the series cover Carlisle Indian School Football stars with ties to specific geographic areas. Some biographies will necessarily be repeated because the person had strong ties to more than one place. For example, Gus Welch and Lone Star Dietz both were from Wisconsin and later coached at Washington State. Other volumes in the series will cover particular teams such as the 1905 Carlisle Indians who defeated Army in an historic game. There won't be a book for Ohio because those players will be included in the volume on Carlisle Indians in the NFL.

Wisconsin's Carlisle Indian School Immortals

The second book in the series was released in the 2011. This volume follows the lives of 17 players both on and off the reservation. Many of them made significant contributions to football after their playing days were over as coaches, but their greatest contributions were in other fields. This is not a just a book about the lives of athletes; it is history. The book's frontispiece is a map of the reservations located across the state of Wisconsin. <more>

Oklahoma's Carlisle Indian School Immortals

The first book in a series on Native American Sports Heroes is now available and has received rave reviews. In addition to the biographies of 14 core Carlisle Indian School football stars with ties to Oklahoma, the book includes chapters on Carlisle Indian School, early football and the team's primary coach, Pop Warner. The book is heavily illustrated with period photos and cartoons. <more>

Oneida Carlisle Indian School Immortals

The third book in the Native American Sports Heroes Series is about the Oneidas, mostly from Wisconsin, who played on the legendary Carlisle Indian School football team. The life stories of over 25 young men are told. Some names are familiar to fans of football history, such as Metoxen and Wheelock, others are not. Some of them returned to the Oneida Nation after leaving Carlisle, others found success elsewhere in numerous occupations.
